A Quick Guide to EU Battery Compliance for Custom LFP Packs

If you’re importing custom LFP battery packs into Europe, compliance isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s the cost of doing business. With the EU’s new Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 fully in play, the rules have tightened up. Here’s a straightforward breakdown of what you actually need to check before your batteries hit the EU market.

1. The New EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

Gone are the days of just slapping a CE mark on a product and calling it a day. The EU replaced the old Battery Directive with a much stricter regulation. For custom LFP packs (used in drones, power tools, or ESS), you now need:

  • Technical Documentation: Detailed specs, circuit diagrams, and risk assessments.
  • EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC): A legally binding document where you (the importer or manufacturer) take full responsibility for compliance.
  • Labelling: Clear marking of capacity, chemistry, and separate collection symbols.

2. UN38.3 Transport Testing: The Non-Negotiable

Before any lithium battery enters Europe, it must pass UN38.3 testing. This is a transport safety standard. Without a valid UN38.3 test report and summary, your shipment will sit in customs until it’s destroyed or returned.
Pro tip: Ensure your battery supplier provides the Test Summary (required since 2020), not just the full report. Customs officers often ask for this directly.

3. RoHS and REACH Compliance

LFP chemistry is inherently safer and cleaner than lead-acid or NMC, but you still have to prove it.
RoHS: Restricts hazardous substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium in the electronics of your BMS (Battery Management System).
REACH: Regulates chemical substances. You need to ensure your battery casing and internal components meet REACH SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) limits.

4. The Upcoming Wave: Carbon Footprint and Due Diligence

This is where the EU is heading next. By 2025-2026, large LFP batteries will require a Carbon Footprint Declaration. Additionally, the EU requires Supply Chain Due Diligence — meaning you have to prove your raw materials (lithium, cobalt, nickel) were sourced ethically.
For SOHO importers, this means you need a supplier who actually tracks their upstream supply chain, not one who just buys from the spot market.

5. Why Local QC in Poland Matters

Compliance isn’t just about paperwork; it’s about physical reality. A supplier can send you a compliant certificate, but if the BMS cuts corners, your end-customer faces the risk.
At HZY Powertec, we bridge this gap. Based in Wrocław, we don’t just source custom LFP packs; we physically inspect and verify them before they leave for your warehouse. We check the BMS, the cell balance, the welding quality, and the UN38.3 documentation.
We turn compliance from a headache into a checkbox.
